H-KIT 036

Overview

NGAL (Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin) is a sensitive and early biomarker for renal tubular injury, especially useful in diagnosing Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). NGAL levels rise 2–3 days before creatinine, enabling earlier clinical intervention.

 Clinical Significance

Traditionally, AKI diagnosis relies on:

  • Serum creatinine changes
  • Urine output metrics

However, these markers are delayed, non-specific, and influenced by external factors (e.g., nutrition, muscle mass).

NGAL offers:

  • Rapid detection following kidney injury
  • Early risk stratification
  • Informed clinical decisions regarding fluid management and nephrotoxic drug exposure
